Bridal Veil Falls June 2005 |
|
While
riding the Provo
River Parkway Trail we visited Bridal Veil Falls.
To our amazement we were able to view the remains of an avalanche
that occurred during the 2005 winter season. The snow filled
with dirt and debris is still over 10 feet high in some
places. The water from the falls is slowly cutting away at the
snow which has made a natural tunnel revealing the inside of the
avalanche.

The force of this
avalanche must have been enormous due to the 12 inch plus diameter trees
that are snapped in half like tooth picks. What was amazing to me
is that the snow by the trail is still solid ice and the temp. outside
was 89 degrees. I have to say that I'm glad that I can view this
destructive force of nature while it's melting and not why its roaring
down a hill. This is the reason the Bridal Veil Falls tram and
restaurant is in ruins and hasn't been operational for many many years.

If you plan to be is this area enjoying the Provo
River Parkway Trail and the remains of this
avalanche are still there view it from the trail. Don't climb on the
snow or enter the cave the water has formed. I would expect this to
melt over the next few weeks but who knows maybe it will last until
next winter. The best way to view Bridal Veil Falls is from
the Provo River Parkway Trail, but you can also park across the Provo river
in the old tram parking lot which would provide you a full view
of these beautiful falls. |
