Located about 7 miles up
Payson Canyon is the Grotto Trail, commonly known as Grotto Falls. The
trail is short, wide, with little elevation gain making it a great trail
for all ages.
The hike begins from the parking area just off the Mount Nebo Loop
Road. It follows a small stream and curves its way through the forest.
In a few locations you cross the stream on large timbers put in place by
the forest service. This adds excitement to the trail especially for the
kids.
Once you reach the end of the trail you are greeted with a beautiful
water fall cascading into a small pool of water, surrounded by steep rock
walls. The pool is shallow and great fun for wading and cooling off on a
hot summer day.
The best time to visit the falls is late June to the end of summer.
The temperature outside would be warm enough to enjoy the very cold
water pouring over the falls. If visiting the first part of spring , use
caution as the water levels will be higher and the stream will be
flowing at a higher rate.
If you find yourself taking a drive over the famous Mount Nebo Scenic
Loop or heading up to Payson Lakes for some fishing opportunities, take
some time and visit the Grotto Trail, you’ll be glad you did.
