Ice Fishing Rockport Reservoir 2007
Each year usually around the end of December first of January Rockport Reservoir freezes over and offers ice-fishing opportunities for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Perch. On our visit the ice was approx 5" thick with about 5 inches of fresh snow on top. With our gear in hand we walked out approx 150 feet from shore to a depth of approx 40 feet of water. We rigged our poles with small jigs tipped with mealworm and dropped our lines to the bottom. Within five minutes I hooked into the first Perch of the day. This Perch was fat and healthy, and made me think, are the Perch back in Rockport? After landing the first fish the bites instantly cut off. We decide to move around to different depths to locate the fish with no success. With just one hour of light left we decided to head back out to 40 feet of water. We once again lowered our baits to the bottom and landed another Perch. We repeated the process and ended up with 7 Perch; six of those were caught in 20 minutes. It was a beautiful but cold day on the ice and we even caught a few fish making our trip to Rockport that more enjoyable.
The baits that seem to work for us are small glow in the dark jigs tipped with mealworm, wax worms, or night crawlers. Lindy Techni-GloŽ Panfish Kit includes 30 assorted Genz Worm jigs, 30 assorted Fat Boy jigs, two Hook-A-Loops and a Flambeau tackle box to keep it all organized. If you plan on ice-fishing Rockport be sure to always check the ice conditions, bring the proper safety gear and have fun. For updated fishing reports visit the Utah Outdoor Activities message forum.
