Ice Off Fishing Utah's Reservoirs 2008

Utah Outdoor Activities

Deer Creek April 2008

As the lower reservoirs are finally released from their ice caps, it’s time to get out your rods and take advantage of this very exciting fishing opportunity. Through the colder months the fish slow down and feed very little throughout the winter. Once these reservoirs are ice free and the water temperature increases all fish become very active and cruise the shorelines for the abundant food supplies. Because of the actively feeding fish and the close proximity to the shore, I rank this one of the best times of year for shore fishermen.

You can expect the lower reservoirs (weather permitting) such as Deer Creek, Rock Port, Jordanelle, Echo, Pineview, Yuba, and Mantua to unthaw first. Utah Lake is already ice free and success for Walleye’s has already been reported. We spent the day fishing Deer Creek reservoir and there is open water on the north end by the island. The fish were active, however they were biting very light. We managed to hook into one large fat trout using green sparkle power bait. The baits of choice for this time of year are Powerbaits, Worms, Rapala’s, Wooly Buggers, Daredevils and many more. Of course the type of bait and the method used depends on the reservoir and the species of fish you are targeting.

As the spring weather continues to warm you can expect the fishing action to be good for all species. So dust off your rods, make the trip to your favorite reservoir and take advantage of the spring fishing season. Oh, and don’t under estimate Utah’s community fishing ponds as the same rules apply. When the water temperature warms the fishing action will increase. See Ya Out There!
