Ice Fishing Scofield Reservoir 2007 Utah Outdoor Activities
Ice fishing season has begun at Scofield Reservoir. On our visit the reservoir was capped with 5 inches of ice with 4 inches of slush on top. We fished for a few hours before we landed our first fish of the day. The best success was to fish in approx 20 feet of water and suspend your bait 12 to 15 feet below the ice. The bait that worked best for us was a 1/16oz glow in the dark jig tipped with wax worm. Most bites were very light and difficult to detect while others were hard and fast. We fished for approx 4 hours and only landed 3 healthy rainbow trout. Although not the most productive fishing day, it was great to get out for the first ice fishing adventure of the season.

If you plan on ice fishing this year always use the safety tips below before venturing onto the ice.
1. Find a large rock and throw it onto the ice, if it breaks through well that's obvious. If the rock doesn't break through it should be safe enough to venture a few feet from shore.
2. A few feet from shore drill a test hole and check the thickness of the ice. If you are still unsure best bet would be, not to go!
3. Fish with a buddy. Carry a rescue rope and a pair of ice picks for self-rescue.
Keep in mind that around moving water the ice
will be thinner and such areas may be dangerous to venture in. Some
lakes have natural hot springs bubbling up from the bottom so you should
always research what lake you plan to fish before you make your trip.
Keep these safety tips in the back of your mind, get out and enjoy this
fun and exciting sport, you'll be glad you did!
