Lake
Powell 2003

Camp
At Halls Creek Bay. Taken by K Webb
Well
it really wouldn't be summer at my house without a trip to Lake
Powell; all though this year was a little iffy. We had heard the
tale of the low water, and the boating hazards that awaited us. But
after a long debate we new there was no way we could go a summer
without visiting Powell. So we loaded the truck and boat to the
gills and off we went to whatever horrors awaited us. Well imagine
are surprise when we arrived and all was well. The ramp at Bullfrog
Marina was easily accessible, not really all that much different
from last year. We only have a small boat so Halls Creek was are
destination of choice, which turned out to be a great one. Halls
Creek offered plenty of camping on nice sandy beaches. We had
beautiful calm water every morning, and most of the day. In the
evening distant thunder storms would arise but by the time they were
noticeable to us, we were all tucked snugly in for the
evening.

Our
first day there we traveled up Lost Eden Canyon to visit an old cave
we ran across last year. We were awed by its beauty and size
then, with the low water this year it doubled in size. We then
headed up Lake Canyon, which seems to be a favorite for a lot of
people, beautiful but busy.

Day
two was spent fishing to no avail, I guess if you want to be a
serious fisherman you have to get out of bed before noon. So with
the fishing a wash we dragged the kids around, and around, and
around. Don't they ever get water logged?
Day
three was another futile effort at fishing, so we headed up Moqui
Canyon. Is there anything to say about Moqui Canyon other then WOW!!
We spent the whole day drifting around from cove to cove. We got in
a lot of cliff jumping, okay in my case small rock jumping, but I
tell you those water logged kids are fearless. We actually did see a
couple of striper boils in Moqui, but as soon as we could get the
poles ready, a boat would buzz by and that would be the end of that.
Oh well the fun is in trying - right? By day four we had all had are
share of sun, sand, water, and fun. We just had a casual day around
the bay, and made plans for the trip home, well us adults anyway,
the kids still aren't water logged yet. All in all it was a great
trip, we caught a few catfish, had a Tarantula wander through camp,
and soaked up the rays. What more can we say WE LOVE LAKE POWELL!!

- Cliff jumping is very dangerous, if you participate in this
activity you do so at your own risk. If you don't have the
proper equipment to check to water depth do not jump off any cliff.
And always wear your life jacket when involved with any water
activity. Always use your head, if the cliff is higher then your
average high dive don't do it.

P.S.
If you have not visited Lake Powell this year because of the water
levels, we recommend you do. With the low water you can view canyons
and caves that have been submerged for years. Around every corner
you can see scenery that you have never seen before. With a
good water year this all may be under water again.
