Salt Lake Regional Wild Horse & Burro Center

By Utah Outdoor Activities

Located at the mouth of Butterfield Canyon is the Salt Lake Regional Wild Horse and Burro Center. This center serves as the primary preparation center for Wild Horses and Burros in Utah and other states such as Nevada and Idaho. On our visit we were greeted by the friendly staff of the facility, who shared the history of the center and what it's used for. The center was built in 1995 with the help of community volunteers. The Kennecott Copper Corporation donated the land and because of its location the land is wooded with Juniper, which provides a natural setting and protection for the Horses and Burros.

The center was built to provide a location to house the animals that are rounded up each year by the BLM. The purpose of these round ups is to thin out the herds and search for hurt or sick animals. The animals are brought to the center cared for, immunized and looked after by trained professionals. These animals are then put up for adoption, or relocated to other BLM lands across Utah or other states.

Visitors are welcome to visit the center. Bring the whole family to view the different species of Wild Horses. I even learned something new on my visit. I have lived in Utah my whole life and have always known about the Wild Horse population but never knew that herds of Burros run free in several locations throughout the state. There is always something new to learn about this great state if you just get out and explore!
