This is the first point of interest on the Tilted
Rocks Auto Tour. The
Swelter Shelter is one of the oldest known sites of human occupation
in the monument. While researchers excavated this site the
projectile points that were discovered may date back from as long
ago as 4,000 to 7,000 B.C. On the shelters walls you can view
pictrographs and petroglyphs that were painted or scratched by the
Fremont Indians. The art left behind by the Fremont
Culture is said to be about 1,000 years old. When viewing this
rock art please do not touch them or the rock surface around
them.
