ViperSharp Knife Sharpening System
We are very fortunate in Utah to have so many different ways that we can enjoy the great outdoors. We are equally fortunate to have so many local based companies producing some amazing outdoor products. Today we want to share just one product that has taken the guess work out of keeping your knives sharp and ready for their next outdoor use. This Utah born product is called the ViperSharp Knife sharpening system. The purpose of this article is to show you what comes with the ViperSharp basic kit.
Hard Plastic Plano Storage Case:
The first thing we noticed with the ViperSharp Basic system is the case. The kit comes in a plano hard case with foam inserts to keep your sharpening kit protected, organized, and ready to go. When not in use, the kit within the case easy to store.
The basic system includes a hard plastic cutting board base which is set up and ready to be mounted to your work bench or you can even use a wood clamp to keep the sharpening system in place while you are sharpening your knives.
The upright system includes the outer sleeve, clamp receiving rail, which allows you to quickly and easily swap blade sides, and the inner adjustable post for exact angles every time.
The inner adjustable post has marks on it for infinite angle adjustment. The first mark starts at 16 degrees, then goes down 1 degree every mark thereafter. We like to sharpen our knives between 20 to 22 degrees.
The knife clamp holds your knife tightly in place while sharpening. The inner clamp is lined to protect your knife from scratches.
The kit includes 3 allen wrenches that are used on the clamp, clamp receiving rail, and to secure the Upright System to the base.
A locking ring for the guide rode is included to keep your stone from moving too far past your blade.
Also included is a bearing for the guide rod so there is no slop, and a bolt to secure the Upright System to the base.
Guide Rod and Stone Carriage:
Allows you to quickly and easily clip in your different stones to achieve the best result with your strokes.
Five Ceramic Sharpening Stones:
Five ceramic stones are included in the basic system. You will receive one 80 grit stone, one 220 grit stone, one 400 grit stone, one 600 grit stone, and one 1200 grit stone.
You can use water or oil on the stones, however, once you use oil, you can no longer use water.
The leather strop is included so you can remove fine burrs, and polish your knife edge to a mirror like finish.
All the items mentioned above are what comes with the basic ViperSharp System. Other options and accessories can be added to fit your needs. We opted in for a larger stone base. This base is 9 inches square and weighs in at just over 5 lbs. There is also a 6-inch square stone base that weighs just over 2 lbs. The stones are beautiful and will really give a solid and steady feel to the system.
Also available are diamond stones for your set. They come in 250, 400, 600, and 1200 grits. These are steel plates impregnated with diamonds that last a long time and will not hollow out like ceramic stones. They can sharpen even the hardest steels.
Another option is an extra clamp to allow you to sharpen blades longer than 7 inches easier and quicker, however it’s not necessary.
