Did you know that one of the world’s best training sites for hang gliding and paragliding is right here in Utah? We’re talking, of course, about Flight Park State Recreation Area. Located at the Point of the Mountain, it has attracted flyers for decades.

The flight park is managed through a partnership between the Utah Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (UHGPGA) and Utah State Parks and Recreation. What makes “The Point” such a coveted spot? In addition to great wind conditions, it offers the unique ability to launch from either the north or south side. This provides more opportunities to fly and also introduces new dynamics that make each flight a thrilling challenge.

Of the 700 or so individuals who fly at The Point each year, about 30% are from out of state. So the flight park serves as a magnet to bring people to our state and generate revenue for nearby businesses.

Even if you’re not personally paragliding or hang gliding, it’s enjoyable to make a visit to The Point. It’s fun to watch the flyers take off from various points in the flight park. Additionally, there is an area for flying RC helicopters and airplanes. From the parking lot, just head west and you see it. So, one way or another, you’re bound to see some airborne action when you visit the flight park.

There are no restrooms, pavilions, or other facilities in the area. Also, no camping is allowed. So plan on bringing any food and water you’ll need. You can just put a blanket on the ground and enjoy the fun. The views alone make a trip worthwhile.

Please make sure to clean up after yourself when leaving. The individuals who use this area are very passionate about what they do, and we owe it to them to help keep things looking good. Additionally, with the high winds at The Point, any mess you leave behind can quickly scatter and become an even bigger mess.

To get to the flight park, take I-15 exit 288 near the Point of the Mountain. Briefly head east and then turn south on Minuteman Drive, which is the frontage road that parallels the interstate. After two and a half miles, turn left on the dirt road by the sign that directs you to the Point of the Mountain Flight Park. This road takes you all the way up to the parking area.

There are no entrance fees at the flight park. It’s open year-round, as long as the weather permits.
