Ancient Petroglyphs and Pictographs
Located in the “Buck Horn Wash”

By Rocky Halladay

2000 years ago ancient Indians pecked and painted this rock. The peckings on the rock are called “petroglyphs”, and the paintings on the rock are called pictographs.
These drawings are on the cliff face right next to the main road through “The Buck Horn Wash”.  These are perhaps the best drawings in the area that I have seen, they are worth the trip, and be sure to bring your camera the scenery is exquisite! This is one of Utah’s best kept secrets.

Directions: approximately 173 miles from Salt Lake City

1.  From Salt Lake get off Interstate 15 onto the Price/Manti exit. You are now on “Highway 6"...set your mileage at “0".

2.  Approximately 66.8 miles you will turn onto “Highway 10"..turn right after exiting ‘Highway 6" (go towards Castle Dale).

3.  Continue on traveling until your mileage reads 94.7 miles and start looking for a sign to your right ( it is very, very, easy to miss this sign... it is small and blends in with the scenery) that reads “Buck Horn Wash” The Wedge Overlook”. If you drive past it and end up Castle Dale you have driven too far... go back.

4.  Turn left just after you see the sign. You will turn directly onto a dirt road ( cars can travel on this road unless there has been precipitation).

5.  Right after you turn onto this dirt road you will see a sign that tells you “Pictograph Panel 22 miles”. Follow the sign/s.

When you get down in the Buck Horn Wash area (the beautiful formations) look off to your left for more drawings to see... you may have to walk a short distance.

There is a restroom on the way and at the Pictograph Panel. It is best to go in the early morning or the late afternoon so you can see the drawing’s details without the sun shining on them.
