The Wedge Overlook

By Rocky Halladay

The Wedge Overlook is one of the most scenic vistas in the state. The Wedge over looks the San Rafael river as it flows through the “Little Grand Canyon”. The San Rafael river is a combination of Ferron Creek, Cottonwood Creek, and Huntington Creek which meet at a single point, and then continue to the Colorado River. The Wedge is a massive upheaval geological dome of which the top layers have been eroded away. Further erosion by the San Rafael River has created the spectacular views that are available today. The Wedge Overlook provides restrooms, handicap access, camping (limited to designated sites) hiking and mountain biking.

Directions:

The Wedge Overlook is approx 173 miles from Salt Lake City.

1.From Salt Lake take Interstate 15 to the Price/Manti exit (Highway 6), at this point set your trip odometer to "0".

2. Travel approximately 66.8 miles and exit on Highway 10 towards Castle Dale.

3. Continue traveling until your mileage reads 94.7 miles and start looking for a sign to your right that reads "Buck Horn Draw" "The Wedge Overlook", approx 94.7 miles from The Price/ Manti Exit.

4. Turn left just after you see the sign. You will turn directly onto a dirt road ( cars can travel this road easy unless there is precipitation).

5. Reset your trip odometer to “0” when you are next to this sign (pictured above).

6. Travel 16.4 miles until you see a sign that reads “Wedge Overlook”.

7. Stay to your right and you will travel 2 more miles to the actual “Wedge Overlook”

Use caution when driving this road due to frequent sudden sharp curves.
