Gorge Dam By
Utah Outdoor Activities
Flaming Gorge Dam is
located on the Green River in northeastern Utah. Construction of the
dam was completed in 1964, and full operation of the dam and
reservoir began in 1967. The power plant began commercial operation
in 1963. Reclamation operates the power plant located at the base of
the dam, and the Western Area Power Administration (Western) markets
the power. Water released from the reservoir through the power plant
ranges
from 800 to 4,700 cubic feet per second (cfs). The dam is a
concrete arch structure with a height of 502 feet and a length of
1,285 feet.
Tours of the dam are
available at the visitors center in the summer from 9 a.m to 4 p.m daily.
Winter tours are offered Friday through Monday every hour from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. The visitors center is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New
Years. A limit of 20 people per tour has been put in
place. You are required to pass through a metal detector
and no bags, cameras, pocket knives etc. are allowed on the
tour. Once you get through security a friendly guide will begin
the tour. The tour starts on the top of the dam with over
looks of the Green River several hundred feet below. You
will then take a short elevator ride to the bottom of the dam where you
will pass beside the power plant and view the Green River as it flows
out at the base of the dam. The highlight of the tour
is being able to feed the large trout that school at the base of the
dam, be sure to bring your quarters so you can buy a handful of fish
food.
