Smith and Morehouse Reservoir

Tucked away in the high Uinta Mountains, up Weber Canyon and at the top of the Weber River, lies Smith and Morehouse Reservoir. At around 7,900 ft in elevation, this 44-acre lake is long and narrow. Adding to the allure is the fact that it’s surrounded by rocky shores, tall trees, and abundant wildlife.

Many people frequent the lake to catch fish. There are plenty of good-sized rainbow trout and tiger trout to target. Additionally, if you use smaller flies and spinners, you might hook into an arctic grayling. One of the most popular fish in the lake is also the most elusive: kokanee salmon. If you can locate them and find a way to entice the bite, the action can be consistent. Just note that it is illegal to catch them during spawning season.

Because the lake prohibits motorboat travel over a wakeless speed, paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing are the best ways to get around. Smith and Morehouse Reservoir The reservoir is also popular for hiking; the nearby 14-mile Smith and Morehouse Trail takes you east into the Uinta Mountains toward Island Lake.

When visitors come to the reservoir, they often want to stay awhile. The Smith and Morehouse campground has 34 sites, with the Ledgefork campground 10 minutes away boasting an additional 73 sites. Make sure to book early in the year, as the reservations fill up quickly due to all the fun activities this area has to offer.

How to Get There:

From Salt Lake City, head east on Highway 80 for 36 miles to the Kamas exit. Travel south for 12 miles to Oakley. Turn left on Highway 213 and travel for 12 miles until you reach the end of the pavement. Turn right and after about two more miles you’ll reach the campground entrance.
